Strength of The Body Through Motion 2019

My work explores the anatomy of the body through motion. This series of works contains a sequence of shots taken at different times and is a study of how the body reacts when put under stress or when doing an action. The four subjects are seen performing an action where their body is either engaged or moving through motion. Through showing how different parts of the human body change their position when doing various actions, this work aims to capture the strength and beauty of the human body in motion over a period of time.I was inspired by Scott Eaton in his ongoing project called “Bodies in Motion” where he captured his subject as he or she moves at different times. He aims to document the power, beauty and possibility of the body in motion. The high-resolution sequences of athletes and dancers in his project have provided students an understanding of the function, form and anatomy of the body. In the same way, I wanted to explore the human body further, to understand how the strength of the body adapts to movement. This work requires much attention to the choice of location and time of the day. Several test shots were done and within these takes, the camera’s shutter speed was increased to capture shots that showed a clear representation of the body when moving. The best body representation shots were those in which the subject showed much energy and dynamism. The location was decided based on the action that the subject had to do. The time of the day played a big role because natural sunlight was needed to make the picture brighter when the camera’s shutter speed increased. This work is targeted towards people who seek motivation for their everyday, among whom includes students or working adults who engage in potentially mundane routines. These portrayals showing the subject’s energy and strength through motion show people that the impossible is possible if they work hard towards it, and that the human body is capable of transcending its perceived limitations.

Clambering up a pole (Model: Ryan Hercus)

The representation of the body when it adapts to the stress it takes while moving up the pole. How the body is able to resist the pulling effect of gravity.

Jumping over a fence (Model: Matthew Coster)

The way the subject moves from the ground, before he jumps and after he jumps over the fence. How the body changes from when he is in the air compared to his landing position.

Climbing up a boulder wall (Model: Kevin Hoh)

The subject shows how the body reacts to stopping motion when climbing up a boulder wall. From one position to reaching out to the next hold causes the body to swing away. The position of the legs are changed according to how much the body swings.

Performing a handstand (Model: Jesse Guo)

The subject shows how his body adapts while break dancing. A demonstration from one pose to his body responding to dropping back down.
